There & Back
By: John V Connor
When I was growing up well into my teens I was very active playing ice hockey for my city team, the Thornhill Thunderbirds, and working in Northern Ontario during my summers as a wilderness land surveyor. After college, I accepted a position as a Forest Engineer and continued to be physically active in my position and playing Senior A hockey for the Longlac Nordiques. I married and within a couple of years, we emigrated to Florida. I became less active, our family grew from 2 to 5 rather quickly. After finishing grad. School at UCF, I became an Assistant Professor & Psychologist. After being promoted to Associate Professor and Program Manager of Teacher Education, I soon suffered from a brain hemorrhage, was pronounced brain dead, and was comatose for a month before awakening. Miraculously my cognition was intact and eventually through rehab. I had a full physical recovery too. However, physically I was weakened and would require future spinal surgery by the same brain surgeon that saved my life when I was comatose. My daughter a graduate student in nutrition and exercise, she works as a Nutritionist and coordinates exercise programs for the military, recommended a keto-based diet and exercise program, and soon mentioned your guidance for me, Dr. Berg. I was able to play old-timers’ ice hockey again, started trimming down again, and reached my retirement age (33 years as a professor/psychologist). After retiring for a week, opportunity struck and I was off to Barrow, Alaska to provide psychological services to mostly the Iñupiat until The Spring of Covid. I returned to the Sunshine State, not to miss Hurricane season; However, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and decided to have it removed promptly. An excellent surgeon, Dr. Kalser removed the cancerous tissue from me by cryosurgery/cryoablation in August of 2020. Soon I accepted a contract with Yellowstone Special Services to provide psychological services for Yellowstone County. Although my PSA is significantly lower (1.9) and I am at a lower risk of prostate cancer I am still high in terms of glucose and diabetic risk. Between my daughter and Better Half, Kate I have been on a significant Keto diet and am getting back to my college weight of 200 lbs. I follow a keto - low carb. With increased tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables, less meat... Here is a picture of myself and one of my hockey-playing grandsons.
