Tail of Two Blood Sugars
By: Michael Foster
Borderline diabetic, with well-dispersed periods of binge alcohol consumption that almost certainly put me into the diabetic part of the curve. Even when consuming a low carb diet, but not quite keto, say 100 grams of carbs a day my A1c was 6.4 last measured. And A1c was 5.8 1 year ago. So definitely pre-diabetic most of the time. A few weeks back, I went to regular blood sugar monitoring and in the morning my blood sugar was averaging about 180, and really only came down to about 130 late into the evening... So that sounds bad... right? I went on a stricter keto diet (about 50 grams - with increase exercise and HIIT - about a week or 10 days ago - with 16 to 18 hour daily fasts - two meals a day. Took about 5-7 days for my blood sugar to drop below 100 and any time during the day. Lately, morning measurements are now (recently last few days) down to about 130 and evening measurements are about 102. So that is good some real improvement and I expect more soon. I exercise about 5-7 hours a week, mostly walking but as mentioned have started adding some HIIT, and weight training. I am 67 years old and was cured of Hep C about 6 years ago, so my liver is probably not in the best of shape but better than it would have been if the Hep C wasn't cured ;-) thank goodness. I'll update you in a few weeks. BTW, I've been using Keto on and off - mostly off for 6 years - caused kidney stone/oxylate stones - fortunately I figured out how to stop that - potassium citrate - lemon and lots of water - ;-)
