Super Chlorinated water in Somalia in 1984

Story

By: John Harris Yazzie

To this day I am still mentally and physically fatigued. It started when I was in the military after I had to drink super chlorinated water ordered by a Navy Doctor to kill fecal bacteria in water, which we were receiving from the municipality of Berbera, Somalia. After I returned from that exercise, I noticed I started feeling mentally fatigued and physically weak and later my skin turned yellow from jaundice, then the yellow went away. Over the years, I started having multiple symptoms and doctors would treat for the symptoms and not try to find an underlying cause. Of course, I told them of my theory of when everything started. Over the years, I found I was gluten sensitive, and for the most part, I stabilized the fatigue by taking multivitamins, especially with B-complex and D3. There are many nuances of my experience and self-medication I left out, but I had to self-medicate since the doctors were not listening to what I was saying about my symptoms and relying on their own blood tests. Like the time I told the doctor, I did not have a thyroid problem and I wanted a gluten test, but he did a thyroid test anyway and not a gluten test, then in another instance given thyroid medication when I did not need it. Recently, the theory of Leaky Gut has made sense of my previous multiple symptoms, especially when it was induced by having to drink that super-chlorinated purified water and it damaging my stomach lining. One of your programs that helped me was your presentation about vitamin D3 because a previous supervisor mentioned I had energy during the summer, but low energy and extreme fatigue during the winter. Vitamin D3 knowledge helps to manage fatigue, but it is not the magic bullet to recovery especially when the underlying cause is leaky gut. But knowing with a little more certain about leaky gut, I can focus on this and hopefully get a diagnosis. I do have a generic diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but it does not come with a diagnosis or prognosis.
