Patty Burn's Story

Images Story

By: Patty Burn

Patty Burn started a strict keto diet in December 2017. She had been heavy her whole life and hated what she saw in the mirror, at 53 years of age. Never a little woman, she stood a full 5’9” tall; but  150 pounds (68 kg), which she had lost on Weight Watchers 26 years prior, had all come back—plus 20 pounds more.

“Although I conquered the physical side of weight, I hadn’t faced nor dealt with the mental side,” she said.

When she finally decided on keto, her family and friends created a network of support for Burn. She’s a middle school science teacher and even her students gave her encouragement. As a grandmother, she now enjoys getting down on the ground with her grandsons and they love it too. “Their new GaGa can run and play with them,” she said.

For the first month of keto, Burn found it difficult because she was detoxing from all the processed foods that previously made up her diet. “After the first month, I had zero craving and stuck to it almost obsessively,” she said.“I never cheated, logged every bite in my carb manager app, and stayed within my 1200 calorie limit I set myself.”

Before she began her “healthier me journey”, Burn was taking various pharmaceutical pills for energy, to calm her nerves, for pain and inflammation, for depression and anxiety, and one to help her sleep. She attended a physical with her doctor both six months and a year into her keto lifestyle, and he was “blown away” by her results.

“He remembered [at the same] time last year I was in a lot of pain,” said Burn.“We spoke about possible carpel tunnel/tendinitis and knee replacement surgeries if my weight didn’t change. Now there is no pain in [my] wrists, knees, or back.”

In five months, Burn lost 84 pounds (38 kg) and in seven months her weight loss hit the 100 pound (45 kg) mark. In 16 months, she’s lost a total of 164 pounds (74 kg). Her blood pressure and all her blood tests are back in the normal range and she’s off her pills. She has replaced them all with one natural daily vitamin.

“My new motto is ‘NOTHING tastes as good as healthy feels’,” she said. “Bottom line [is] I finally believed in myself and for the first time truly feel I’m worth it.”
