Overcoming PPPD with healthy keto!!

Story

By: Matthew Greenhouse

I’m a 32 years old health coach and have been dealing with a condition called PPPD (persistent postural perceptual dizziness) for half a decade. While PPPD can be a vestibular disorder, in my case, my balance system still objectively works pretty well. Rather, my experience of balancing can resemble something like disembarkment syndrome, and especially when walking. Had been driving me nuts! After trying the standard treatment, SSRI’s and VRT, and making no progress toward recovery, I was becoming increasingly anxious and started drinking heavily. Alcohol would also alleviate my PPPD symptoms, but alcohol is obviously a bad medication. Six months ago, after a short bender, I realized consuming sugar made me anxious, so I stopped consuming sugar and carbs. Then, I discovered Dr Berg's videos, as well as other experts in the keto word, and adopted healthy keto! After six months of healthy keto, I’m experiencing 90% fewer symptoms of disequilibrium, not drinking at all, and have been attending AA alternative meetings to work on re-building a healthier relationship with alcohol. Since I still have an anxiety disorder, I make sure to get a good ratio of omega 6 to omega 3’s and B-vitamins every day. I also consume all the micronutrients in sufficient amounts and lots of veggies and greens! For lunch, I may have sardines with cheesy creamed spinach, and add some olive oil and nutritional yeast for extra nutrition and flavor. I love experimenting with new recipes but always focus on nutrition first. That means healthy fats like olive and coconut oil, seafood, greens, and superfoods like nutritional yeast. I feel like my anxiety is improving, though slower than the PPPD, physically, I feel better than I have in years! My advice for anyone starting keto is to pack your freezer with nutritious vegetables, always have healthy fats on hand, and plan out at least a few dishes you can make quickly or prep for the week. Then, don’t be afraid to spice things up and try new recipes to find out what feels good and tastes delicious! Thanks, Dr. Berg for all the great educational content you put out there! Matt
