My wife & her friend dared me.
By: Tom Apps
Greetings! My name is Tom Apps, age 69. I live in Kelowna, BC, Canada. For many years, my wife wanted me to cut down on carbs but without having something else to replace the carbs, and since "fat" was told to us as a bad thing this was more of a starvation plan. A friend of my wife had done research on keto because her husband had cancer and passed the information to my wife. My wife and her friend dared me to try keto so to prove them wrong. I would try it for a few days, get all grumpy, and then quit. This started around November 25, 2020.
Both my wife and I were relatively healthy in that we are not on prescription medication like almost all of the people we know that are in our age group. I would have said that any of my problems were related to "old age". I am 5' 11" tall and weighed 195 lbs on average. When I started keto I also did intermittent fasting 18 - 6. Within one week I lost 10 lbs, and in 1 month it was down 20 lbs. I have now dropped around 35 lbs, I now weigh around 160 lbs. I ate a slightly better diet than the Standard American Diet but not by much. I liked my deserts and was always snacking between meals. My wife and I tried to stay away from junk food.
Here are the improvements that I notice; Lost 35 lbs, Arthritic hips are normal, Other joint pain reduced, Less gassy, Less body grease ( I would stain my bedroom pillow ) and less bathtub ring, less use of chapstick on lips, I suffered from Actinic Keratosis on my head and it is reduced, I had elevated Bilirubin and now it is normal, Brain for reduced. During exercise, I don't burn out and now I don't need days to recover, some food tastes better. I try to Intermittent Fast or OMAD as much as possible, but life gets in the way sometimes ( have to go out for breakfast with friends ).
I am more active than most people my age, but should exercise more. Since I started keto during COVID lockdown it was easy to stay away from bad food. Now when traveling it is harder to stay on the diet. My advise to people new to keto is to follow the Keto Doctors on youtube, like yourself, and compare the information each are giving. Having several doctors to follow who know the science and that have benefited from the diet themselves, I believe is the route to go. I compare it to a university style of lecture, listen, observe, and compare. Thanks very much Tom Apps
