Lost 100lbs with Keto-Fasting with Dr. Berg
By: Joe Villarino
I left the US Army in my late 20’s and started gaining weight from 180lbs to 285lbs at the age of 40 years old. Medically, I was getting worse and started with high blood pressure, high chlorestorl, diabetes, obesity, arthritis in my knees and other medical issues that are getting worst each time I visited my doctor. I had some mental health issues (depression/anxiety) which eventually helped to contribute to an obsession with eating and before I knew it, I was close to 300 pounds. I struggled all throughout my 30’s to my 50’s with weight, but this was the heaviest I have been. In August of 2021, after speaking to a friend of mine who was a medical doctor and I asked his opinion on my medical issues. What got me seriously thinking about life in a more serious way. He said to me “You might as well plan for your funeral in the next 5 years if I continue my path of eating and continue gaining weight which eventually have an effect on your heart”. It was already causing me so much back and knee pain and depression and anxiety. I had tried many weight loss program and other methods previously and had given up because I didn’t think there could possibly be a way to get thin and fit for someone with chronic back pain!” I found Dr. Berg through his YouTube channel and started watching videos on Keto & Intermittent Fasting. “What Dr. Berg taught me about how my body can run on Ketones through the Ketosis process was very interesting. Many people fail to learn the science behind it and that causes them to fail because they just don’t realize how important getting into ketosis is by eating the right foods and the right times and cutting those snacks out completely and only eat once or twice a day while intermittent fasting, which is the second biggest things I learned from Dr. Berg. The third biggest thing I learned was how important it is to get the right amount of electrolytes like potassium and sodium in my diet and I find that I use a ton of pink salt on my food and in my water which helps me to retain water and cuts down on the urge to over drink.” Since starting Keto, I currently weigh 180 pounds after losing 100lbs! My goal is to get to 170. “I definitely notice that my pain in my back and knees are less painful. I t walk a lot and do light weight resistance. I can totally tell a difference not having the extra 100+ pounds on me.” Favorite Dr. Berg Product? Lemon flavored wheat grass juice. What was the hardest part about losing weight? This is actually a hard question because once I got into losing the weight the hardest part of losing weight for me was replacing my wardrobe. So, I had to steal my son’s wardrobe mostly medium shirts, and 34x30 pants. I was losing weight so rapidly that I couldn’t afford to buy clothes fast enough! The hardest was donating my clothes that are new and most of them 2XL shirts. On a more serious note, having extra skin is a bummer. But, it’s still not nearly as bad as having all that weight on me! What is the best part? I’m not going to lie, I’m happier the way I look and feel! I know my wife would never judge me but I like to look good for her and so it makes me feel good! What would you have done differently if you could do it all over again? I might try to include a variety of recipes. I kept it simple for quick prep and affordability. What encouraged you to not give up? I just kept thinking about how I want to watch my grandkids grow up and enjoy the rest of my life traveling and to help people there’s no way I can be a goodgrandpa if I’m fat and can’t move around and do the things grandpa should be able to do. And it goes without saying that I don’t want to cause my own death at a young retirement age and leave my wife too soon! What would you like to say to someone reading your keto success story? Life is so short and there’s not a lot of time to mess around. If you’re struggling right now with your diet and your weight, just think about how much better you’re going to feel once you’ve reached your goal! I’ve had to tell mysel every day that those bad food like donuts, pasta, and sugary food, as good as they are, they’re just not worth it. Your physical and mental health are on the line and it’ll feel so much better once you get there and you definitely can get there! If you’re determined to lose weight, dedicate your life to your physical well being and be disciplined you cannot fail and you will be successful! What is your favorite way to exercise? I like to walk more than anything because it’s low impact and great cardio. I do some weight resistance training. What is your favorite keto recipe? I think my favorite recipe is meatballs with zucchini noodles, and keto clusters!
