Keto Saved My Liver and My Life

Images Story

By: David Monasterski

I was eating vegetarian for most of 2015-2018. Oatmeal, brown rice, fruits, grains, vegetables, honey, etc … Thinking that it was healthy, but my weight kept creeping upwards … eventually to 321lbs at 5’11” and 57 years of age. At the same time - summer of 2018 - I was experiencing excruciating night leg cramps and night sweats. My Doctor ordered a blood test. My ALT was out of whack. She then ordered an MRI of my abdomen. We found out I had a Severe Fatty Liver. I was like: “That’s strange - I quit drinking beer in my early 40’s”. She attributed it to my diet - too many carbs. At the same time she sent me to a Gastroenterologist. He ordered more blood tests. We found out my Ferritin was 4580!!! Yikes!!! My Gastroenterologist then ordered a liver biopsy, and lo and behold it showed that I had Hemochromatosis. I have been receiving Phlebotomy Treatments for 2.5 years now, plus I have lost 150lbs on Keto. I’ve gone from 321lbs to 170lbs now. My waist went from 60” to 35”. My Ferritin is now 53. And I have to strongly credit you - Dr. Berg - for saving my life. I love Keto. I do IF & OMAD. I have not caught Covid, as I used to catch everything in the past - including EBV, and Fifth Disease. I also have Hashimoto’s Disease and Fibromyalgia. My joints have been damaged by the iron from the hemochromatosis, but the weight loss makes it much easier on me. Thanks Dr. Berg for all the instructional medical information through the years.
