Jason Copeland's Story
By: Jason Copeland
Jason Copeland saw the photos from his nursing school graduation and was disgusted at the way he looked—and felt. He knew he had to do something for his health. That’s when he did a YouTube search on intermittent fasting (IF) and stumbled upon Dr. Berg’s videos. One of them, “Keto and Intermittent Fasting: The Big Overview,” was his first introduction to keto and it was the starting point for Copeland’s keto journey.
“While my parents and friends have always supported my weight loss efforts, they had their doubts about keto,” said Copeland. “I got a lot of crazy looks when I told people I was eating primarily fat and skipping breakfast or limiting how frequent ly I was eating.” The doubts of his peers only pushed him to prove them wrong. “I told myself that they may not believe my words, but they’ll believe results,” he said.
His biggest lesson learned from Dr. Berg was that losing weight is a byproduct of creating a healthy body, not the reverse. After watching hundreds of Dr. Berg’s videos and using the information as a main resource, Copeland only wished he had started sooner. “There’s almost no comparison with how I feel now compared to before keto. It’s night and day,” he said. “I used to feel horrible, bloated, lethargic, low self-esteem. Now I feel great, have energy, self-confidence like I’ve never had before.”
In the first week, he did suffer from keto flu and keto rash. “Both eventually subsided,” Copeland said. “Then the struggle was just trying to transition to smaller-sized clothes or being in-between sizes which really sucks.” Now, he eats one meal a day, does extended fasts between 48 and 72 hours long, and two to three days a week he goes to the gym for about an hour and a half.
The best part of keto for Copeland was when someone he hadn’t seen in a while could barely recognize him. He realized that it’s hard to see the results yourself because it can seem so gradual, but when other people noticed his success, it was a good feeling.
“You can’t change the past and you can’t turn the clock back 10 years and start,” he said. “But you can start today. You can make a difference about your health and weight today.” Since starting keto and intermittent fasting in May 2018, Copeland has lost nearly 100 pounds (45 kg) —dropping from 361 pounds (163 kg) to 263 pounds (119 kg).
