I stopped gout cold

Story

By: Sean Mattingly

I'm 49, around 270lbs now, and former US Army Military Intelligence with permanent disability due to multiple injuries to both ankles. Needless to say, I live a fairly sedentary life with a recumbent exercise bike as my only form of exercise that's light impact. While that's better than nothing, my diet was garbage, always tired after a meal, and I was pushing closer to 280~290 lbs. On top of the disability, I had developed gout about 14 years ago where it had gotten more and more severe as the years have been going on. I was told that it would get worse with age and there was nothing that could be done except drink lots of water, eat less red meat, avoid seafood, etc. This was also followed by, "We don't know what causes it and there is no cure." Gee, if that doesn't inspire much confidence (sarcasm). Now I'm not the kind of person that just takes what a doctor says blindly. My experience in the Army where they give Motrin out like candy has made it where I investigate the reasons why something is happening. So I learned that gout is either an issue with kidneys, the liver, or both. This led me to dietary changes that had elevated Vitamin C, drink two cups of coffee followed by eight cups of water, chicken and turkey replaced most all the meats I ate, everything was low fat, etc., etc., etc. which got old really fast with less than stellar results. Rather, the results were all over the place and in some case made things much, much worse. Imagine having one of your knees so swollen you can't bend it at all, the pain is so bad you're crying even before you try to move (and I have a high pain tolerance), you sleep on the floor because you have to crawl with one leg extended and dragging just to use the bathroom, and at times you have to urinate in a container and dump it because you can't even get up to sit on the toilet. That was the last and worst flare up I had over two years ago. I was hospitalized and my doctor has had me on alopurinol since then. Though I had minor but recurring pain while taking it in various joints letting me know my gout was still lingering in the background. While that sounds like a blessing to some, it's medication I'd rather not be on in the first place. So I dug into what the drug is and how it works. This is where I started to get closer to finding out the real problem. Alopurinol tells the liver to stop producing uric acid which turns into urate crystals when it's in over abundance. Ok, but the point here is that it deals with the liver...uh-huh. Let's keep that in mind for just a moment. Moving up to about three months ago, I started developing edema. My doctor said it may just be something I ate that's causing me to become inflamed and that gout could be the cause. Did blood tests and my triglycerides were high with most other things within tolerable levels. Ok, so I started digging again and a month and a half ago I found Dr. Berg's channel on YouTube. Bingo. Now I'm getting to the real reasons of what's happening any why. I know now I have fatty liver (Funny how that comes up looking back at alopurinol.) and most of my symptoms have come from that. Started by getting Choline and NAC, then added Apple Cider Vinegar and Milk Thistle followed by a keto diet. I made the changes responsibly rather than go crazy with the only thing I kind of have cravings for is soda. It's a hard thing to kick since sugar is so addicting. However, I haven't had one in four weeks and use organic apple juice during lunch to offset any craving otherwise, and drink my morning coffee, green tea twice daily , and water all other times. Results? I've dropped ~10-12lbs in four weeks, stopped taking alopurinol three weeks ago and I haven't had joint pain since. I'm feeling better every day and no longer want to nap after I eat. My wife and friends noticed a difference just last week that I look like I've lost weight and my attitude is more energetic. The best part is I didn't ask them. It was four different people at four different times within a couple days! Can you say winning? Thank you Dr. Berg. This has been the relief I've been needing and am very, very grateful for the information that has led to me fixing the problem at the source rather than just deal with the symptoms. I look forward to continuing with this diet and will report back as things progress. Talk soon.
