Good results for an old gal!
By: Roberta Doak
I’m from SW Ohio. My brother in Michigan has been doing keto off and on and wanted to start up again so I joined him on June 1, 2021. At 62, I’m 5’ 10” and I weighed 203.4 lbs. I love to cook and bake and thought t was ok to use Heritage wheat flour in my recipes. During my keto journey, I have not once cheated by knowingly consuming sugar or grains and I read labels and have watched a hundred Dr. Berg videos, so I’ve learned a lot about ingredient terminology and what to avoid. Where I made mistakes was probably in amounts and ratios. The first week I ate 3 healthy keto meals with no snacking. The second week I ate mostly two meals. The third week I ate mostly one meal. The fourth week my brother and I did a 7-day water fast. The first 2 days were easy except for drinking the awful electrolyte drink I made (potassium/salt). The lemon helped only a bit. Drinking salty water makes me gag, but I did it anyway. After a few days, the back of my throat was raw and sore from lemon so I eliminated the lemon. About the third day, I felt weak and my throat was so dry from the salt. I cut back half on both Potassium and salt. The original amount was half of the daily recommended so now I was at a quarter. Same results, weak and tired. On the last day, I only drank water and felt about the same. Today is my re-feed day and I feel pretty good now that I ate an egg and half piece of bacon. An hour later I had a piece of sharp cheddar cheese. Another hour later I had a few pumpkin seeds and a few walnuts. I’m drinking water and I feel pretty back to normal. I plan to IF for as long as possible but definitely, continue the healthy keto eating. Although I didn’t feel great during the water fast, I had some remarkable results. I had already lost 13 lbs in the three weeks preceding, and then this magic happened:
1) Heel spur went away. I had been taking 20,000 IU of D3 and K2 which helped only a little.
2) Pain and stiffness went away on my two toes that had surgery 5 years ago for bunion/hammertoe. Also, the referred pain in my ankle and up the side of my lower leg is gone.
3) No more sore hips at night.
4) No more stiff neck/occipital triggered headaches which I have had for over a year every night so I lack sleep.
5) Trigger finger went away.
6) Liver spots lighter on back of hands and fingernail splitting improved.
7) My daily morning runny nose til about 11:00 has greatly reduced.
8) The bump under my lower lip from a blocked salivary gland has also been greatly reduced.
The hard mass is very soft so I’m hoping the magic will continue! During my 7-day water fast, I lost 8.2 lbs for a total of 21.8 lbs in 30 days. I’m a little disappointed, thinking I would lose more for how diligent I was and how much better my brothers' results were. In the end, I’m more excited about the health outcome than I am disappointed in the mediocre weight loss. Unfortunately, I did not take any keto before and after pictures. I am able to wear many of my clothes that have been stored for years so I am very happy about that! Thank you for all you do Dr. Berg!
