From weighing 320 to benching it at 49

Images Story

By: Jamie Juhl

Retired from the Army in 2012. During active duty, I passed 40+ kidney stones from 1994-2010. My liver was in bad shape and I don’t drink. Motrin was life in the military and it caused more damage than would ever benefit. I’ve had four Docs accuse me of alcoholism and run other tests to see they were wrong. I was afraid to take painkillers in 6 combat zones and would refuse to be MEDIVAC’d (Bosnia -‘96- Pakistan- ‘08). There are literally vehicles with my handprints dented into their bumpers from passing stones. Had 5 IVPs and four stints over the years. Pain killers do not work on me and I have come out of anesthesia during two surgeries becoming violent. After retiring in 2012, PTSD and meds made it hard to lose weight. Had double hip surgery to increase blood flow in both femoral heads due to bilateral necrosis in 2016. It worked on the left hip. Was 320 lbs and asked VA for help but they wanted to do lap band. Not even a nutritionist consult. Had two stones on the way per ultrasound. After finding Dr. Berg's vids on ACV and lemon juice, I got mad. Almost rage. How could urologists not want to try this first? So for two weeks, I did ACV and lemon juice 2-3/day. Day 1, I immediately stopped acid reflux meds I was on for 12 years. Since that first day, I never had heartburn again. After 3 weeks, I returned for another ultrasound. The tech thought I passed the stones as I was clear. Even my vision was sharper and clear. I noticed it was better after I stopped drinking soda eight years ago but what a difference. So I went on keto for 66 days and lost over 60 lbs of fat. Strength training specialists helped with the numbers but I gained 30 lbs of muscle and lost a total of 80 lbs of fat. Got off 2/3 of meds and docs asked what changed. I replied I stopped listening to your horrible advice and fired three of them. Added low healthy carbs for powerlifting and benched 314 for record at 49 y.o. in the 238 weight class 9 Nov ‘19 three days prior to right hip replacement. Sailed through surgery and completed PT two weeks prior to lockdowns and moved my house three months later. Went to docs just prior to lockdowns and have been asked if I take steroids and beg them to test me for them but they know my aversion to drugs. I feel great at 51 y.o. at 250. I volunteer at a cemetery and with patriot guard bikers in San Antonio but none of this would have been possible without your help. Thank you doesn’t cover it. This Vet thanks you for your service Dr. Berg. Jamie. Image 1 was competition 9 November 2019. Vid 4491 is 3 reps the same weight so still improving.
