Cindy and John
By: Cindy Fasulo
John and I are both in our early 60s and live in the Washington DC area. My son introduced me to the keto diet 4-5 years ago and I noticed that I lost my 'thighs' on the straight keto plan, but my cholesterol went through the roof. My son followed Dr. Berg and recommended his website, so I subscribed and learned about 'healthy' keto. I also read Dr. Berg's body type book and discovered that less protein and cheese was recommended for my body type. It took a little bit but I honed out my diet to include lots of eggs, fish, limited red meat and Kerrygold butter, and salads of olive/oil and balsamic vinegar, raw veggies (chopped cabbage, raw cauliflower pearls grated raw beets, and daiqon) as well as anything else GREEN cooked or raw (except spinach -- I am a stone maker) and nuts when I could fit them into my plan. I am 5'10" and dropped from 145 to 130 pounds. I have been working out three times/week for years, but never got the results I started seeing once I got serious on healthy keto! My biggest mistake are trying to step away to celebrate with friends. It gets out of hand quickly! But once I can get back on my healthy keto, everything begins to realign -- water retention and inflammation dissipate after a week or so and the pounds start to fall off and I get back to 130 or lower. The reason I HAD to write is that John didn't share my keto until he got sick. Without going into details, I fed him salad and salmon once a day and in 10 days he had lost 20 pounds and his blood sugar went from 245 to a normal reading. We are still working through the health issues, but our doctor was amazed. I believe healthy keto can turn around all sorts of issues with health no matter what age you are -- and John is a believer now. My advice would be to find the foods that you enjoy and get rid of grain and sugar and then snoop around for hidden crap. Eat your food as close to original form as you can get it and use IF to get down to the weight you are comfortable at. I'm still struggling with the situation when I'm thin enough and how to put the breaks on without grain or sugar, but I'm going to try oatmeal (gluten-free whole grain no sugar w/flax and chia) when I get below 130 this time around.
