By Chance during Covid

Story

By: Sarah Buermann

During the Covid Isolation, my sleep cycle slipped later and later around the clock. I went to sleep late and would get up whenever. I would get up with no appetite at all.

I did notice that I would be accompanied by quite a burst of energy as the late morning became early afternoon.

By chance, I happened on a Dr. Berg video about Intermittent fasting. Since I already seemed to be doing that, I decided to try to get more serious about it. From there I decided to try Keto. Although I could not follow it fully at the time and cannot now be very strict with it, at least I moved to much lower carbs, and also less sugar.

And being familiar with the Weston A. Price info re: good fats, I was happy to review my attitude toward fats in general.

I have Hashimoto's thyroid, I am gluten-sensitive. I would become inflamed if I consumed nightshades, making a Keto diet quite a lot difficult. But because I am ancient and had absorbed the wisdom of Adelle Davis re: nutrition for health (rather than big Pharma), some of the changes were easy. But some were not.

From my efforts to use Intermittent fasting I dropped 30 pounds effortlessly while trying to incorporate more Keto process. The downside is having to invest in a selection of pants since my very excellent jeans now fall down. Those of us with hourglass figures are probably more prone than other body types to suffer financially from losing our stored fat.

A surprising discovery from my Keto attempt: I have NO DESIRE FOR GLUTEN PRODUCTS OR FOR CHOCOLATE! And I do feel a little lonely from not being accompanied in various stores by these previous addictions. Also - I realize that what I had thought of as an addiction to chocolate was actually an addiction to the accompanying sugar.

Food life is a lot cheaper without the very expensive chocolate bars I would buy, but it is lonely.

I think I slipped into IF and Keto in Autumn of 2020.

There have been some jarring experiences: loss of sense of direction, unfamiliar confusion, desire to remain inert, etc. It now seems to me that I had NO IDEA of the effects caused by DEHYDRATION.....Most of my discomfort I believe had to do with a severe need for liquids.
I would advise everyone starting on this path to give special attention to liquids, or thirst-quenching vegetables. I like lettuce for that, especially romaine, although am not sure that is on the approved list. Steamed turnip is also good.

I try to keep breakfast to between noon and 2 pm and another meal around 6 or a little later. Usually I fail to maintain this schedule but it gradually gets better.

IF and Keto disrupt social life, dealing with that will require more thought. I do not have the tech skills to provide images/audio etc. nor do I want to learn them now.

Despite being nearly 80, I have a business and run it by myself, so I do not have a lot of time on my hands.

I don't care if I am not published but I appreciate the opportunity this day to consider what I am doing about food, health, exercise, and social life as related to my eating habits.

Dr. Berg's short videos are very helpful, even if one is not interested in Keto. The technical detail re: how various nutrients work (or not) fills in lots of useful info.
