Keto Buns Recipe – Easy Low-Carb Hamburger & Hot Dog Buns

Total Time: 35

Serves: 3

Per serving: 120 calories, 7 g protein, 1 g carbohydrates, 10 g fat

Ingredients

3 large eggs, room temperature

3 Tbsp cream cheese

1/4 tsp cream of tartar

Onion powder, parsley, and salt to taste

Optional: sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C.

  2. Separate egg yolks from egg whites.

  3. Using an electric mixer, combine cream cheese and egg yolks.

  4. In a medium mixing bowl, add egg whites and cream of tartar.

  5. With an electric mixer, mix egg whites until it peaks. This step is crucial. If the mixture doesn’t firm up, the buns won't have a bread-like texture.

  6. Gently fold beaten egg whites into egg yolk mixture. Do this in three batches to maintain the fluffiness of egg white mixture.

  7. Shape mixture into buns on a prepared baking sheet or parchment paper. For perfectly round buns, pour the mixture steadily in one spot so it spreads from the center outward into a circle.

  8. Bake in oven for 15 to 25 minutes and allow buns to cool before removing from baking tray. For an added crunch, lightly toast buns, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Recipe Tips:

  • The baking time may vary depending on your oven, and it’s best to keep an eye on your rolls to ensure they don't burn.

  • Feel free to add other herbs or spices, such as garlic powder, fresh herbs, or Italian seasoning, to customize the flavor.

Hotdogs and hamburgers are classic comfort foods. But when you're following a keto diet, store-bought rolls are off-limits due to their high carb content.

Here’s a keto buns recipe that is easy to make and low in carbs, making it a perfect option for your next cookout or weeknight dinner!

Why you’ll love these keto buns

Having a hotdog or hamburger without a bread bun just isn't the same. That's why this recipe is a game-changer for anyone following a keto lifestyle.

Here are a few reasons why you'll love these low-carb rolls:

  • Easy to make with just four simple ingredients

  • 100 percent keto-friendly

  • Gluten-free, grain-free, and dairy-free

  • Ideal for meal-prepping

This recipe is perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to the typical lettuce wrap, and you'll save money by making your own keto buns instead of buying expensive, pre-made, low-carb bread at the store.

What ingredients are in keto buns?

While traditional hamburgers and hot dog buns are packed with carbs and additives from processed wheat or white flour, these buns are entirely keto-friendly.

This recipe uses cream of tartar to stabilize the egg whites, while cream cheese provides a slightly tangy flavor and helps achieve the bread-like texture.

These simple ingredients make delicious and keto-friendly buns perfect for hot dogs, hamburgers, or your favorite keto breakfast sandwiches.

The best thing is that these buns can be tweaked to fit your dietary needs and preferences.

While this particular recipe doesn't use any flour, other keto bread recipes incorporate nut flours such as almond or cashew flour and baking powder to enhance texture.

What to serve on keto buns

Keto rolls are incredibly versatile and can be served with a variety of delicious, low-carb options.

Some mouthwatering ideas include tuna avocado burgers, which combine creamy avocados with a flavor-packed tuna steak for a satisfying meal rich in heart-healthy fats.

Bacon cheeseburgers on a homemade keto bun can't be beaten. Layer crispy bacon and melted cheese on a juicy beef patty for a truly indulgent burger.

The keto BLT burger is another fantastic meal that pairs well with a low-carb bun. It offers a delicious twist on a classic sandwich made with seasoned ground beef, crisp bacon, ripe tomatoes, and fresh butterhead lettuce.

These buns also complement breakfast sandwiches such as sausage and egg, making them ideal for busy mornings and leisurely weekend brunches.

Hot dogs are another great choice, especially when topped with your favorite low-carb condiments such as sugar-free ketchup, hot sauce, or Dijon mustard.

When choosing your protein, always look for organic and grass-fed meat to avoid hidden preservatives, hormones, and antibiotics.

"Deli meats and hot dogs are often high in nitrates," explains Dr. Berg. "These additives may have carcinogenic effects that could increase your risk of cancer."

Storage and reheating

These keto buns are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, but if you have leftovers, they can be stored in an airtight container or ziplock bags and then refrigerated for up to three days.

To reheat, simply place them in a grill, oven, or toaster for a few minutes until warmed through and crispy on the outside.

You can freeze these buns and thaw them in the fridge before reheating. This makes it easy to have low-carb buns on hand whenever a craving strikes or you need a quick meal option.

Place baked buns in a freezer-safe bag once cooled and freeze for up to three months. It’s best to label frozen buns with the date and contents for easy identification.
