Total Time: 20 minutes + at least 1 hour freeze time

Serves: 5

Per serving: 243 calories, 3.7 g protein, 6.7 g carbohydrates, 13.5 g fat

Ingredients

2 medium avocados

1/2 cup cocoa powder

3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

3/4 cup coconut milk

1/2 cup powdered erythritol

Stevia to taste

Directions:

  1. Begin by peeling and mashing ripe avocados in a large bowl.

  2. Mix mashed avocado, cocoa powder, heavy cream, canned coconut milk, and powdered erythritol in blender until well combined.

  3. Add stevia to taste for desired sweetness.

  4. Pour ice cream mixture into a freezer-safe container and place in freezer for one to four hours.

  5. After one hour, check consistency of ice cream. If it's still too soft, leave in freezer until desired consistency is reached.

  6. Once frozen, remove from freezer and let ice cream sit at room temperature to soften.

  7. Scoop and serve with your favorite low-carb toppings.

Recipe tips:

  • To add some crunch, stir in chopped nuts or cacao nibs before freezing.

  • Top with whipped cream and sugar-free chocolate chips for an extra indulgent touch.

  • If you prefer a richer and creamier ice cream, use full-fat coconut milk instead of light.

  • Adding fresh lime juice or lemon juice to the avocado mixture helps prevent browning and introduces a subtle tang to the ice cream.

  • Use a food processor for a smoother consistency.

  • Vanilla extract can be added to create a more traditional ice cream flavor.

Whether you are craving a low-carb sweet treat or looking for a creative way to use ripe avocados, this chocolate avocado ice cream is the perfect solution.

This sugar-free homemade ice cream, made with only six ingredients, will satisfy your cravings while staying in ketosis.

Why you’ll love this keto chocolate avocado ice cream

Enjoy a guilt-free treat with this decadent avocado chocolate ice cream, which blends creamy avocados, rich cocoa powder, and full-fat coconut milk.

Packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats from avocados, this frozen dessert offers a satisfyingly smooth texture and a decadent chocolate flavor.

Cocoa powder is well known for its impressive health benefits and has been linked to improved moods and a lower risk of chronic inflammation.

Research published in Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care found that cocoa can promote weight loss and enhance muscle glucose absorption, which helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.

The study further reveals that cocoa's antioxidant properties may offer neuroprotective benefits, improve cognitive function, and lower inflammation, thereby improving overall health.

Moreover, incorporating coconut milk, which is abundant in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and lauric acid, introduces healthy fats known to enhance energy-making processes.

Substituting traditional sugar with powdered erythritol and stevia reduces the carb content while maintaining sweetness. This makes this recipe an excellent choice for those following keto and individuals with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

What makes this recipe truly irresistible is its versatility. You can personalize this keto ice cream by adjusting the level of sweetness and adding toppings such as chopped nuts or sugar-free shredded coconut.

What is “no-churn” ice cream?

No-churn ice cream, or no-machine ice cream, is a simple method of making homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker.

It involves blending together a few ingredients and freezing the mixture until it solidifies into creamy, delicious ice cream.

In this recipe, the avocado serves as a natural thickening agent, making churning unnecessary.

The result is smooth, scoopable ice cream that doesn't require special equipment, such as an ice cream machine.

Health benefits of avocado

Avocados are used in many recipes and for a good reason. This delicious fruit is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help balance cholesterol levels.

It's also a great source of potassium, providing 800 milligrams per cup (230 grams), which is double the amount found in a banana.

Potassium is a crucial electrolyte mineral essential for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, regulating fluid balance, and reducing the risk of heart disease.

Avocados also contain fiber, which can help promote satiety and aid in digestion.

Additionally, they're a good source of the antioxidant vitamin E and other essential nutrients such as vitamin C, folate, and magnesium.

"Avocado boosts the absorption of pre-vitamin A and other nutrients, enhancing the conversion of carotenoids into retinol, the active form of vitamin A. This process helps improve vision and strengthens the immune system," explains Dr. Berg.

This versatile fruit also has anti-inflammatory properties, and regularly consuming avocados may help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and other chronic conditions.

Keto chocolate avocado ice cream serving and storing tips

This recipe serves five, but you can easily double or triple the recipe to serve a larger crowd.

To store leftovers, place the ice cream in an airtight container and freeze it for up to two weeks. Before serving, let it sit at room temperature until it softens, and serve it with your favorite toppings, such as whipped cream, chopped nuts, or sugar-free chocolate chips.

If you plan to prepare this recipe in advance, freeze the ice cream mixture in a freezer-safe container or individual cups for easy serving.

Remember to cover the container with plastic wrap or an airtight lid before freezing to prevent ice crystals from forming on the surface.

2. What kind of ice cream can you have on keto?

There are many keto-friendly ice cream options, such as this recipe and other avocado ice cream variations.

Other popular low-carb options include coconut milk-based ice creams, almond milk-based ice creams, and sugar-free gelatos. When buying store-bought keto ice cream, it's essential to check the label to ensure it's not loaded with hidden sugars and artificial flavors.

3. Is keto chocolate avocado ice cream hard to make?

No, this recipe is straightforward and doesn’t require an ice cream maker. It only takes a few ingredients and some freezing time to achieve a delicious, creamy dessert. You can get creative with different flavor variations by adding nuts, berries, or sugar-free shredded coconut.

4. Is avocado ice cream healthier than regular ice cream?

Avocado ice cream is generally considered a healthier alternative to regular dairy-based ice creams since it doesn't contain ingredients such as sweetened condensed milk and sugar.

It's also lower in carbs and higher in healthy fats while containing essential nutrients, including potassium and vitamin E. However, it's important to consider portion sizes and toppings as they can significantly impact the overall nutritional value of this dessert.

5. What are the benefits of avocado ice cream?

Low-carb avocado ice cream offers many nutritional benefits. Avocado provides heart-healthy fats, fiber, and vitamin C, while the cocoa powder adds antioxidants and a rich chocolate flavor.

By using low-carb sweeteners such as erythritol and stevia, this recipe won't raise blood sugar levels, which is linked to a healthy weight and metabolic balance.

6. Is avocado ice cream dairy-free?

This recipe includes heavy whipping cream, which is a dairy product. However, you can easily create a dairy-free version by replacing the heavy cream with full-fat coconut or almond milk. This will also make the recipe suitable for those following a vegan or lactose-free diet.

7. What milk can I use instead of coconut milk?

You can use other types of milk, such as almond or cashew milk. However, keep in mind that it may alter the texture and taste. Coconut milk adds a rich creaminess that may be harder to achieve with other plant-based milks.
