Finding myself.
By: Anna
I’ve always struggled with my weight mostly because of how I was eating and what I was eating, following the general and for the most part, misleading advice of westernised dietary society for example; “eat little and often”, “carbs for energy” etc. In fact, the only useful advice from this is “eat your greens”; ok I can work with that.
Fast forward to July 21, I was in the midst of post-natal depression and the start (I didn’t know it then) of a marital breakdown. My maternity leave had been spent in lockdown & shielding trying to protect my vulnerable ex premature daughter and I was also grieving for my late mom.
Things got messy as I turned to food for comfort and for something to do. The weight ballooned on (as you can imagine). I reconnected with an old friend whom I myself had argued with him in the past (myself being a nurse at the time) until I was blown in the face about how keto was unhealthy (confusing it with ketoacidosis crisis), intermittent fasting was an even more obscure notion to me- and my friend continued to lecture with my “pre-programmed as a back-up” mindset. An argument that now… well let’s just say he doesn’t let me forget it.. at all (for the right reasons at least).
I was 120kg-264lbs (possibly more) at first weigh in on my journey. I went back to my friend and asked him to help, the difference being this time.. (prepare yourselves) I listened. He referred me to various sources on the internet and Dr. Berg being a firm favourite of him also. And as my thirst for knowledge about keto grew, my appetite and body shrunk and continues to do so (March 22). As I type, I’m now 97kg-213lbs and so much healthier.
The benefits move beyond weight loss itself however and shouldn’t be overlooked. I’ve gone from having morning stiffness in the joints and going to bed with aches and pains, literally feeling like I was falling apart. To easily find myself moving easier and flowing better than when I was a teenager. I’m now at the point of introducing a more disciplined workout routine as well including some daily yoga stretches. The knowledge I have learnt is invaluable and I will be forever indebted to my friend who continues to encourage and support me daily, as well as the knowledge from Dr. Berg and his team. So much so some of the practise I’ve very much applied to my 2-year-olds diet (with caution) as she needs a very high-fat consumption due to having Cystic Fibrosis but didn’t want to fall into the common pitfalls with junk food carbs being allowed in “unlimited amounts” to also be told that her “unlimited diet” puts her at high risk of developing diabetes. I would urge anyone to take a look at Dr Berg's resources on here or on YouTube.
My top tips:
- Take it slow (Rome wasn’t built in a day)
- Take time to digest the information (knowledge is power and all that).
- Make a plan set a start date and ideal weight or outline your achievement goals.
- Get started it’s easier than you think
I promise, 34 years old I have more energy and feel better emotionally as well as physically than I have since I was a teenager.
