Kim Brown's Story
By: Kim Brown
Only 5’3” tall, Kim Brown knew it was time to take better care of her health when she weighed in at 195 pounds (88 kg) with debilitating back and joint pain and received “terrible” lab results from the doctor. She was generally miserable.
“[My] triglycerides were through the roof and my fasting glucose wasn’t great either,” said Brown about her lab results. “[My doctor] suggested I go on a diet. Of course, I knew it was time. So I decided to try keto.”
Overnight, she went from eating between 300 and 400 grams of carbohydrates per day to having only 20 grams per day. She came down with “keto flu” at the start but she stuck with it and saw results in her weight loss.
She first learned about Dr. Berg when she was doing research about becoming a Certified Keto Coach, a title she proudly holds today.
“I didn’t know anything about him at the time but started looking at his plethora of videos and learned so much from him that I regularly catch up on his latest videos,” said Brown. “They are packed full of information.”
Some of his tips that she uses every day include eating for your body type, exercising to decrease cortisol and increase human growth hormone, and not worrying about the carbs in vegetables.
“These [are the] things I practice every day thanks to Dr. Berg and his vast knowledge of how keto works and how to do it the right, healthy way,” said Brown.
Although most of the people in her life were uninformed about keto, sometimes warning her to “be careful,” eventually her friends and family were encouraging and supportive — especially after seeing her dramatic weight loss. Brown’s dad even started his own keto journey.
The hardest part of keto for Brown was simply starting. Since she had quit every other diet she tried, a voice in her head told her she’d fail at keto, too.
It was also hard for her to understand that fat doesn’t make you fat, after being told it does for so long.
“There is something that may seem silly to some, as to what motivated me to lose weight. It was a dream I had,” Brown said. “I dreamt that I was at a dance hall and I wore this beautiful dress. I was thin and pretty. I was dancing with some guy and noticed all the guys in the dance hall were looking at me and wanting to dance with me. It made me feel so good about myself.
“It really wasn’t the guys in the dream that made me feel good, it was me, how I felt about myself. I felt beautiful and confident. I no longer felt self-conscious of my body. Then I woke up, looked at myself, and cried. It was just a dream, it wasn’t real. This dream and how I felt about myself in that dream really prompted me to want to lose weight because I wanted to feel those feelings every day. Now I do feel them in real life and it’s the most amazing thing!”
Before Keto, Brown said she hated the way she looked and felt, was very depressed, and was uncomfortable in her own body. She didn’t want to go out with friends because she was so self-conscious about her weight.
“I knew that if I kept eating the way I was I’d develop type 2 diabetes,” she said. “I didn’t want that, any of it.”
In ten months Brown has lost 90 pounds (41 kg) and her dress size has dropped from 16 to 2. Aside from all the obvious health benefits she’s received, being able to buy clothes that are “smaller and cuter” has been the best part about keto for her.
“[Now], I am happier for sure! My depression and anxiety are gone. My back and joint pain are gone, too. I have so much energy and feel more mentally focused than ever before. I am more confident now and actually like what I see when I look in the mirror. I am also much [calmer] than I was before. My keto journey changed my life in the most positive and beautiful way,” said Brown.
“To someone who is reading this I would like to say to you that you are worth it! The fear you may feel going into it, the uncertainty, that little negative Nellie inside your head telling you you’re going to fail or that you aren’t good enough… just do it! Start today! You will feel so much better and your body will transform,” she said.
“Do for yourself today what your future self will thank you for. Don’t give up! Too many people give up with the first frustration when it comes to losing weight. It’s a process and a lifestyle change. Amazing things will happen for you just like they did for me. It can change your life! You deserve a life that is happy and healthy. YOU ARE WORTH IT!”
Favorite Way to Exercise: Karate, tai chi, kickboxing, resistance training, and dancing
Favorite Keto Recipe: “I love these Chinese Spare Ribs I make!” said Brown. “I also love sautéed Brussels sprouts; and I’ll make loaded cauliflower mash with bacon pieces, shredded cheese, sour cream, and chives.”
